I just noticed from my notes on this tree from a year ago that I'd already started eating the fruit even though it was still green so I just picked the orange that was in the mulch. It was perfectly delicious and juicy. The discoloration on the skin made absolutely no difference to the taste and texture of the flesh of the fruit.

I haven't tried to count the oranges yet this year but from the odd observation of what I've seen around the tree this might be a year where I get 20+. Still not as many as I'd be hoping for at this age of the tree but if I get that many it will be the most I've ever got so I'll be happy with that.

One of the consumers of yesterday's oranges said that she thought that the orange was a bit desiccated so today I'm running the hose at quarter open for an hour at the base of the tree.

Also picked another orange and ate the whole thing myself. I loved it. No dryness. Sweet. Seedless. Delicious.

One thing I noticed compare to the store bought ones was the color. On the outside all of mine still have some green on them. On the inside the flesh appears to be paler than the store bought ones.

Just ate an orange from this tree. This has to be the best navel orange I have ever tasted. I don't know if this is psychosomatic inasmuch as this is the first fruit tree that I planted in this yard and my emotional attachment to it or if it really is as good as I am imagining it. Side-by-side comparison of a store bought navel orange with a homegrown one. Today I bought a box of Sunkist Navel Oranges from Costco so that I could compare what they look and taste like compared to my homegrown crop.

The images in order:

  1. The one the left is the commercially grown navel, the one of the right is from my tree. This is for flesh color comparison. As far as color goes I would say the commercial one is the winner.
  2. Again on the left is commercial and on the right mine. This is for size and skin color comparison and the sizes are generally the same. The skin color on the commercial looks better.
  3. The marketing label on the Costco box.
  4. How the commercial oranges are prepared for transit.
  5. This is the box of oranges from Costco. The range of sizes closely matches what I have on my tree.

The ultimate question though is which one tastes better? My wife and I and our two kids did a side-by-side taste test and it was unanimous. The homegrown tasted much better. Not just a little bit better but MUCH better. Both were equally juicy. The store bought one had some astringency and sourness to it. Off the tree was perfectly sweet. The homegrown one also tasted more "orangey" if that's even a thing...

We cut open about six oranges from the box to make sure that it wasn't just a single bad one and they all tasted the same. We only cut one from the tree. It tasted the same as all the others we've been eating for the last few weeks.

Still around 12 left on the tree. I'm happy with the haul this year. Also the quality has been excellent compared to previous years when some of them were dry. All this year's have been juicy. The tree is getting a lot more water than usual because I've been cleaning out the compost bowl and other things at the base of this tree so all that extra water that would have gone down the drain is now going into the soil around the base of this tree.

I was not expecting the quality to be that good but it was delicious. All the oranges this season have been juicy and sweet. What an awesome harvest. I think that there were around fifty oranges this year. That certainly beats the six oranges we got last year.

Grafted two Valentine Pumello scions onto the west side (and inside for shade protection) to this tree. Neither graft felt good because the host was about twice the width of the scion and I really couldn't line up the cambium layers so I don't think it's going to work. I should have done a Z graft but haven't tried that before and it was baking hot outside and so I used the V graft on the grafting tool.

The scions came from my Valentine Pumello tree that I trimmed back so that I could add shade protection to it.

Update on 1/13/20: While doing an inventory of grafts discovered Valentine #2 graft and confirmed that it had not taken and removed this from tree.

Picked the last of the oranges today from this tree today. One had a bird hole in it. That one towards the top left of the image is about the size of an average grapefruit. A total of 33 oranges this year.

Harvest counts from the last 4 years. Interesting that the tree is seeing an alternate smaller harvest.

Grafted onto this tree today.

  • Nagami Kumquat x2
    • Both Nagami Kumquats grafted onto upright shoots coming out of a branch around 48 inches from the ground and growing in a north-east direction. The outer graft was a cleft graft with the U blade on the grafting tool. The inner graft was my first attempt at a Z-graft and I don't think I did a great job of it.
  • Sanguinelli Blood orange
    • Single scion grafted onto an upright shoot from a south facing branch around 44 inches above the ground. My second Z-graft. Much happier with this one as both scion and host were thicker and easier to work with.

Images

  • The Z-graft for the Nagami. With hindsight I can see why this might not work.
  • The two Nagami grafts. On the left (inside) is the Z-graft and other is the U graft.
  • The wrapped up Z-grafted Sanguinelli.

9 of the last 10 oranges are Olinda Valencia. At first I thought they were a sport of the Washington but then found a note about the location that I removed them from and that they're ripening later than the navels makes sense as they are due to ripen March to June and probably ripened now because of the warmer climate in Phoenix. * If weights or counts are missing then estimates are based on metrics that are collected when both of these are present. If both weight and count is always recorded then the estimates are actual values even though the title says estimate.

** In seasons where weight or count was not collected then the averages from all other seasons will be used to estimate these figures. In those cases there will not be an Average Weight.
