Leaves and branches now coming out from the middle of the tree and looking good.
2016-09-25 (9 years ago)
Removed all shade cloth. Mostly from sub tropical area but also from Aussie Finger lime and from dead blackberries and figs in the SW corner
2016-11-09 (8 years ago)
Still doing well. Looks like it's going to start losing its leaves for winter.
2017-01-07 (8 years ago)
This is the only fig that has not lost its leaves yet. Manually defoliated it today to help it go into dormancy.

Starting to struggle in the heat. I think this will need shade cloth soon if it's going to survive.
2017-05-30 (8 years ago)
Covered with a shade cloth structure today.
2017-08-15 (8 years ago)
Removed shade cloth because (1) looking cramped under there and (2) the forecast is for hot but not extreme hot so I thought that the tree could benefit from some direct sunlight.
2017-11-08 (7 years ago)
Lovely colors on this fruit. Still hard and small and will probably not become ripe this year.
2017-12-09 (7 years ago)
Because it's starting to get cold in the yard I've removed the figs to see if there was any taste in them but there was not. Tiny, dry and not ready yet. That was to be expected.

I've been struggling to grow trees in this five-foot narrow corridor between the block wall and fence. I think that the two factors working against me are the quality of the soil, I think that it's fairly heavy clay, and the heat coming off the wall.
This first image is at 8am and the second at 11:30am. The shadow has swung but an overhead shade will work.

This is the healthiest that I've ever seen this tree. I think that the shade cloth is part of the reason. The fruit is now about the size of a marble.

Last night's storm destroyed about half of my shade structure in the Fig Corridor. I'm going to have to work out some way to fix those upright poles to the block wall. For now I've removed the shade cloth and stowed it away so that there isn't further damage before I've fixed it.

Trimmed away from path to keep in its semi-espalier space of 2.5 feet against the wall.
2018-11-10 (6 years ago)
First fruit ever from this tree. Tiny but dark purple (almost black on outside). The people who ate it said that it was delicious.

Put up shade cloth along the tennis court fence and it looks like it's working. These images taken at 6:30 PM and it looks like they all got a good chunk of shade during the hottest part of the day and the leaves on the figs aren't looking as wilted as before.

- The height has changed by 3" over the last 249 days.

1 beat up fig that wasn't even ripe. All the other figs are tiny on the tree. This hasn't been a good producer.

Sprayed with Polymer AG Anti-Stress 550. Made 4 gallons at a 2.5% dilution ratio and used the backpack sprayer. That amount perfectly covered the trees listed in this note. I was using a fairly course spray and I'm wondering if this product would perform better with a fine spray setting.
